Scientific and technical information
Scientific and technical information, proper, is the content of an esoteric communication that takes place within well established professional communities, with clear norms for production, acceptance and circulations of its products. Thus, the consumption, use and manipulation of this information follows precise social patterns. Consumers are grouped according to these patterns. Primary sources (original articles published in peer-reviewed journals) are preferably consumed, for example, by the members of scientific communities and, in a lesser degree, by members of professional communities. The further the consumer is from the center of power of the producing communities, the more "translation" of information contents is necessary. The ways by which information is produced, manipulated and consumed say much about the consumer audiences, as well as about its producers and about the information itself. Based on data about this, it is possible to design changes in the forms and means by which information is made available, to plan actions that involve consumer communities, among other initiatives.
Possible objectives of research on technical-scientific information:
1. To identify information needs among specific publics (for information services, political decision-making, program and project design, etc.)
2. To identify and analyse scientific production trends that may point towards changes in academic organization and dynamics, economical activity, technological routs, etc. Bibliometric analysis and scientometry.
